Enhanced External Counterpulsation is a non-invasive
outpatient therapy for patients with chronic angina pectoris. The
therapy consists of 35 one hour treatment sessions done at our facility
Monday through Friday for a duration of 7 weeks.
EECP works by utilizing mechanical sequential
inflation of cuffs on the lower extremities which brings more blood
flow to the heart and increases coronary artery blood flow in areas of
the heart where the arteries are narrowed or obstructed. The
resulting increase in oxygen-enriched blood to these areas relieves
symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath which occur as a result
of blocked arteries. Patients who have had interventional
procedures such as coronary bypass surgery or angioplasties and may
continue to suffer from angina may be candidates for this therapy.
A complete patient screening is available at the
Heart &
Vascular Center to help you and your physician decide if
EECP therapy would be a beneficial treatment for your cardiovascular
care.
